Rua Blount

(THEY/THEM)

I am a professional counseling associate, outdoor educator, yoga instructor, and adventurer.

I believe that we make meaning of our environment through stories. We each have a story of who we are and why our lives unfold the way they do. Our work will explore how these stories shape and drive your experiences in this world. My own story includes themes of a rural upbringing with limited resources, leaning into my queer and trans identities, surviving graduate school, building a passion for teaching, and utilizing outdoor adventure and movement as a tool for growth and healing.

I see older teens and adults and am particularly passionate about working with college students, those in the LGBTQIA+ community, everyday athletes and adventurers, and anyone interested in learning tools to regulate their nervous system and heal with trauma.

I use a narrative therapy perspective that centers on meaning, client strengths, and nervous system regulation. I predominantly incorporate aspects of acceptance and commitment therapy, polyvagal theory, mindfulness self-compassion, and somatic mindfulness practices. I use a trauma-informed approach that focuses on nervous system regulation to set the foundation for growth and change. Within this, we will also focus on the importance of recognizing how power and oppression impact our lives and our stories.

I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Oregon State University. I have a PhD in Botany and Plant Pathology and a graduate certificate in college and university teaching. I am a current member of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the Society for Sexual, Affectional, Intersex, and Gender Expansive Identities (SAIGE).
